Two Marines who should have been awarded the Medal of Honor…

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Two Marines who should have been awarded the Medal of Honor…but as mentioned in an earlier post on this blog, the Medal of Honor appears to now be a “Dead Man’s” medal only.  But in this case, “only” the Navy Cross was awarded.

Watch the video several times.  These two heroic Marines did not leave their posts…but the Iraqi ran like hell.

Just what will it take for DoD, and our nation, to honor a real living hero?

Is the Medal of Honor now a “Deadman’s Medal”?

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Saturday, February 21st, 2009

One of the mysteries of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan involves the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest commendation for bravery.

Why have there been so few awards (four for Iraq and one for Afghanistan)? And why have all five been posthumous? In World War II, the posthumous figure for Medals of Honor was 57% and in Vietnam 38%.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine), who served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine officer, sent a letter this week to President Obama asking for a “thorough examination” of the Medal of Honor selection process.

“I am concerned that either knowingly or inadvertently, the Medal of Honor awards process is becoming biased to only acts of valor that result in the death of the service member,” Hunter wrote.

“. . . The selflessness and combat heroism that is represented by the Medal of Honor must be preserved for future generations.”

Marine Corps: New rifle qualification requirements

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Rifle range KD course, field fire changed

No matter what a Marine’s military occupational specialty, all Marines are riflemen first. At a moment’s notice, they must be able to pick up a rifle and effectively engage their target.

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va(Sept. 1, 2005) — No matter what a Marine’s military occupational specialty, all Marines are riflemen first. At a moment’s notice, they must be able to pick up a rifle and effectively engage their target.

Starting Oct. 1, Marines will be required to pass a new rifle of qualification course, one intended to be more realistic to combat situations Marines are faced with in today’s modern conflicts.

Marines will see two changes upon beginning their rifle qualification. First the new scoring system will be the same as the current entry-level course of fire; and second, field fire will now affect a Marines’ qualification score.

The most significant change for Marines will be the field fire portion of the course, which will be called “table two”. Marines will be required to pass table two to qualify on the rifle range.
