US Marine Commander Once Accused Of Dereliction In Iraqi Killings Investigation Leaves Corps

A Camp Pendleton Marine officer who was accused of failing to investigate the killings of 24 Iraqis by a squad in the town of Haditha has left the service.

Attorney Jon Shelburne says Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani’s last day in the Corps was Friday.

Shelburne said Monday that Navy Secretary Ray Mabus recently upheld a ruling that the former battalion commander displayed substandard performance in response to the deaths but should maintain his rank.

Chessani, of Rangely, Colo., was accused of failing to investigate the 2005 killings but a judge dismissed a charge of dereliction of duty.

Petraeus Reviews Directive Meant To Limit Afghan Civilian Deaths

To the U.S. soldiers getting pounded with thunderous mortar rounds in their combat outpost near Kandahar, it seemed like a legitimate request: allow them to launch retaliatory mortar shells or summon an airstrike against their attackers. The incoming fire was landing perilously close to a guard station, and the soldiers, using a high-powered camera, could clearly see the insurgents shooting.

The response from headquarters — more than 20 miles away — was terse. Permission denied. Battalion-level officers deemed the insurgents too close to a cluster of mud-brick houses, perhaps with civilians inside. Although the insurgents stopped firing before anybody was wounded, the troops were left seething.

Its goals are constant, the ultimate objective never changes, but inevitably it manifests itself as the savior of the day, the savior of man. The 2008 Democrat October Surprise that ushered in the first hardcore radical post-American president in American history was the “economic collapse.” Oh yes, that was a beaut.
