FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Congress awards state veterans home privileges to all parents of fallen warriors
WASHINGTON (Sept. 21, 2010) – After a decades-long campaign waged by The American Legion and sympathetic advocates, the U.S. Senate last night cleared legislation that will grant state veterans home care privileges to all Gold Star mothers and fathers; parents who have lost sons or daughters during military service. Heretofore, since the post-Civil War era, only parents who had sacrificed all of their children in service were eligible for veterans’ home residency. The passage by unanimous voice vote followed overwhelming passage of similar legislation at the end of June.
“To lose one’s child to the service of our country is the ultimate sacrifice a parent can make,” said Tim Tetz, Director of The American Legion’s Legislative Division. “We owe them much more than a debt of gratitude. It is heartening to see that Congress is now making an honorable payment on that debt.”

This week, a military judge is considering the defense motion to dismiss the charges for denial of Wuterich’s right to detailed defense counsel. The ruling is expected next week. The final Haditha trial of the last Marine from the original 8 charged was scheduled to begin on September 13, 2010.
The defense team for SSgt Wuterich submitted a motion on August 25th based on the recent U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals ruling on the murder conviction of Marine Sgt Hutchins (see U.S. v Hutchins III, Docket # 200800393, 4/22/10). The court overturned the Hutchins conviction and released him from prison based on the government’s violation of his statutory right to military counsel. The government is appealing that ruling to the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.

The Cuties are Baylee Barrett, Blaire Elbert, Andi Kitten and Madeline Powell. In the summer of 2007 the Cuties were invited to guest star on Disney Channel’s “Cory in The House” which aired around the same time their first YouTube video above went viral in early 2008. The video featured five Cactus Cuties singing their own rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner and captured the hearts of over 3 million people in one month. Their unique and amazing harmonies as well as their character and charm have made them very popular on the Internet.
