Two Marines who should have been awarded the Medal of Honor…

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Two Marines who should have been awarded the Medal of Honor…but as mentioned in an earlier post on this blog, the Medal of Honor appears to now be a “Dead Man’s” medal only.  But in this case, “only” the Navy Cross was awarded.

Watch the video several times.  These two heroic Marines did not leave their posts…but the Iraqi ran like hell.

Just what will it take for DoD, and our nation, to honor a real living hero?

Super Tuesday – We Don’t Need Painted Thumbs

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

From this blogger:

Today, the field of Presidential Candidates will witness the results of their Presidential aspirations in more than 20 states. These are the states in which the Presidential primaries are being contested.

Regardless the outcome, regardless who gets X-number of delegates, one thing is certain. This “experiment” we call American Democracy is still a work in progress. American’s from every walk of life will go to the polls and cast their vote for their favorite candidate.

No car bombs, no mass killings, no hostages and no beheadings.

To be sure, every candidate is an American Patriot. And while wide and varied differences exists among the candidates, they all want what is best for our Nation. Or so they say.

This election is different in many ways from previous ones. For starters, we have a woman and a black American running serious campaigns for the highest political office in the land. This says a whole lot about America and how far we have come as a Nation. The voter turn-out is reported to be the highest in recent memory. Young Americans are stepping up to the plate in record numbers.

Congress has blocked the possible replacement of the cracked Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery pending a study of ways to repair the existing marble monument instead.

A defense bill President Bush signed into law Monday includes an amendment to prevent replacement of the tomb pending a report to Congress. The cemetery had been leaning toward replacing the monument, which was installed in 1931, to maintain its dignity.

Deck of Cards Bible

By Major Bill Donahue, USMC -RET | Thursday, January 10th, 2008

[Blog note: What follows can actually be traced back to World War II, and the day before the D-Day landing. I've often heard my two Uncles (one served in the Pacific as a Marine Aviator and the other with the Army as a tanker under George Patton) talk about this at family reunions]

It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn’t been heard.  The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week.

As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk.

Just then an army sergeant came in and said, “Why aren’t you with the rest of the platoon?”

The soldier replied, “I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord

The sergeant said, “Looks to me like you’re going to play cards.”

The soldier said, “No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country,
