PUERTO RICO STATEHOOD PLOY HARMS ENGLISH UNITY

Island’s governor wants statehood in immigration legislation

PUERTO RICO STATEHOOD PLOY HARMS ENGLISH UNITY

ARLINGTON, VA.— “Puerto Rico’s governor is attempting to circumvent the will of the voters of the Spanish-speaking U.S. commonwealth by urging inclusion of the divisive and expensive issue of statehood in any congressional immigration legislation,” says Jayne Cannava, executive director of ProEnglish which seeks to designate English as the official language of the United States.

“Gov. Luis Fortuno also supports H.R. 2499, which mandates a referendum by Puerto Ricans on the issue of whether the Spanish-speaking island should become the 51st U.S. state,” Cannava notes. “That stealth House of Representatives-passed bill could come up for a vote at any time in the Senate, where it could be amended to ensure a rigged pro-statehood outcome– or it could be cleverly wrapped into an amnesty bill.”

“Fortuno opposes any requirement to adopt English as Puerto Rico’s sole official language of government before statehood admission. So he naturally supports the effort to pass H.R. 2499 in the Senate and, if that fails, to slip pro-statehood language into immigration legislation,” Cannava warns. “The better path would be for the island’s voters to decide their future status on their own terms, rather than being forced by Congress into accepting statehood.”

The City Of Lino Lakes, MN. Passes English As Official Language

By ProEnglishUSA | Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The city of Lino Lakes, MN passed English as its official language to conduct official business.

Finally good judgement and good public policy in the United States of America.

I am proud to have worked with Councilman Roeser on this issue and express my support, as a naturalized U.S. citizen, for this measure.

Thanks to Jayne and the staff at ProEnglish for their support in the process with Lino Lakes, MN.

Different Strokes For Different Folks

By ProEnglishUSA | Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

The topic of immigration and therefore assimilation doesn’t end in political circles or coffee table gatherings.

While performing a few days ago outside of St. Louis, MO., I had the chance to speak with fewer than a dozen folks who came to the show. One congregant noticed that I was Hispanic and with Garcia as a surname it was a give-away.

Her comment was, “As a Latino you sure speak English quite well.”

I couldn’t help but respond.

After a 75 minute show and talking in between songs, I guess she noticed my English. Not every immigrant can learn English as a young child, like I did. Well enough that for some reason immersion was able to eliminate any ounce of an accent, except for my Boston accent, every once in a while.

I told her that as a small child I learned English while watching a black and white TV set my parents saved up to buy. As they each worked two jobs, the purchase wasn’t for them to watch TV, but for me to learn English by watching Sesame Street, the Electric Company, Zoom and other PBS funded shows for children.

The World Health Organization is moving full speed ahead with a controversial plan to impose billions of dollars in global consumer taxes on such things as Internet activity and everyday financial transactions like paying bills online — while its spending soars and its own financial house is in disarray.

The California Communists

By Public Forum | Monday, April 5th, 2010

Editorial of The New York Sun – April 4, 2008

With businesses and individuals fleeing California for states with lower tax burdens, the senate in Sacramento is taking up a pressing issue: allowing the Communist Party access to the state’s public schools. Sure enough, a Democratic state Senator from Long Beach, Alan Lowenthal, who is a longtime professor of “community psychology” at Cal State Long Beach, has introduced a bill to allow Communist groups to use space in the schools and to allow Communists to teach in the schools.

As originally framed, the bill would have even removed the section of the California Education Code that states, “No teacher giving instruction in any school, or on any property belonging to any agencies included in the public school system, shall advocate or teach communism with the intent to indoctrinate or to inculcate in the mind of any pupil a preference for communism.”
