PUERTO RICO STATEHOOD PLOY HARMS ENGLISH UNITY

Island’s governor wants statehood in immigration legislation

PUERTO RICO STATEHOOD PLOY HARMS ENGLISH UNITY

ARLINGTON, VA.— “Puerto Rico’s governor is attempting to circumvent the will of the voters of the Spanish-speaking U.S. commonwealth by urging inclusion of the divisive and expensive issue of statehood in any congressional immigration legislation,” says Jayne Cannava, executive director of ProEnglish which seeks to designate English as the official language of the United States.

“Gov. Luis Fortuno also supports H.R. 2499, which mandates a referendum by Puerto Ricans on the issue of whether the Spanish-speaking island should become the 51st U.S. state,” Cannava notes. “That stealth House of Representatives-passed bill could come up for a vote at any time in the Senate, where it could be amended to ensure a rigged pro-statehood outcome– or it could be cleverly wrapped into an amnesty bill.”

“Fortuno opposes any requirement to adopt English as Puerto Rico’s sole official language of government before statehood admission. So he naturally supports the effort to pass H.R. 2499 in the Senate and, if that fails, to slip pro-statehood language into immigration legislation,” Cannava warns. “The better path would be for the island’s voters to decide their future status on their own terms, rather than being forced by Congress into accepting statehood.”

The City Of Lino Lakes, MN. Passes English As Official Language

By ProEnglishUSA | Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The city of Lino Lakes, MN passed English as its official language to conduct official business.

Finally good judgement and good public policy in the United States of America.

I am proud to have worked with Councilman Roeser on this issue and express my support, as a naturalized U.S. citizen, for this measure.

Thanks to Jayne and the staff at ProEnglish for their support in the process with Lino Lakes, MN.

Your Help Is Needed!!!!!

By ProEnglishUSA | Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I was on the Darla and Jerry Blog Talk Radio show on Patriot’s Network last night to participate in the discussion of the US Constitution. You know, that piece of paper that our forefathers executed as a contract between the government and the people. From the show, I learned of and joined ResistNet.com.

We all know there are many important issues facing our country. As Americans, we love our country, despite its flaws. Without a doubt, it’s the best country on Earth.

Regardless of the issue, we each come together to defeat the enemy; domestic and foreign for the sake of our country, its people and its future generations.

To me, one of the challenges we have is “some” elected officials not possessing the fortitude to realize that the one unifying, the one basic “arterial” thread that runs throughout the “basket” of our great country is our English language.

However, so far, 30 states have courageously fought the battle and made English their official language. The most recent state is Oklahoma. Led by state Representative Randy Terrill, voters will get a chance to amend their constitution in 2010 making English the official language. This bold and courageous move on the part of Oklahomans has drawn the fire of the US Department of Justice because of the ill-fated Executive Order 13166.

Why is the DOJ bullying the Great State of Oklahoma?

By ProEnglishUSA | Monday, August 3rd, 2009

PROENGLISH SLAMS JUSTICE DEPT. OVER OKLA. THREAT

“U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department have no legal right to threaten the state of Oklahoma by withholding of federal funds because its legislature passed a constitutional amendment stipulating that English is the official language of government,” says K.C. McAlpin, executive director of the Arlington-Va.-based advocacy group. “We support the members of the Oklahoma congressional delegation who are seeking justification and clarification from the U.S. attorney general regarding this outrageous attack on a state’s sovereignty.”

“The Department of Justice claims that the implementation of the official English amendment, which hasn’t even been approved yet by the voters, somehow conflicts with civil rights laws, including Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which prohibits discrimination on the basis of national origin. Yet language has nothing to do with national origin,” McAlpin says. “The DOJ further says that if Oklahoma is in violation, that its federal benefits could be denied.”
